For many TVET engineering students, passing N6 examinations is a major achievement. However, earning a National Diploma requires more than academic success. Students must also complete workplace-based training before their qualifications can be finalised.
To support students facing this challenge, Ikhala TVET College has announced 30 Engineering In-Service Training opportunities in partnership with Energy and Water SETA (EWSETA).
The programme is aimed exclusively at Ikhala TVET College students who have completed their N6 studies and still require practical workplace experience to obtain their diplomas.
Applications opened on 9 June 2026 and will close on 23 June 2026.
A Valuable Opportunity for N6 Engineering Students
Across South Africa, many engineering students complete their theoretical studies but struggle to secure the workplace exposure required for diploma completion.
Without practical training, students cannot receive their National Diplomas, even after successfully passing N4, N5, and N6 studies.
The Ikhala Engineering In-Service Training Programme has been introduced to help qualifying students bridge this gap between education and industry.
For successful applicants, the programme offers an opportunity to gain practical experience while moving one step closer to completing their engineering qualifications.
Engineering Fields Covered
The programme is available to students who completed N6 studies in the following disciplines:
Civil Engineering
Students may gain practical exposure related to infrastructure projects, construction support activities, site operations, and engineering processes.
Electrical Engineering
Learners may receive experience involving electrical systems, installations, maintenance activities, and technical support functions.
Mechanical Engineering
Participants may be exposed to engineering operations involving machinery, maintenance systems, manufacturing environments, and mechanical processes.
Applicants must ensure that their field of study corresponds with one of these engineering disciplines.
Why Workplace Experience Is Essential
Engineering education is designed to combine theory with practical application.
Workplace training allows students to:
- Apply classroom knowledge in real environments
- Develop industry-specific skills
- Improve technical competency
- Build professional confidence
- Understand workplace procedures and safety standards
- Enhance future employability
For many employers, practical experience is just as important as academic performance when evaluating candidates.

The programme is only open to students from Ikhala TVET College.
Applicants must:
- Be current or former Ikhala TVET College students
- Have successfully completed N6 studies
- Require workplace training for diploma completion
